Akashev, Konstantin Vasielievitch (1888-1931)
first glavcom (chief commander) of aviation. Graduated from Kaproni flight school (Italy) and higher School of Aeronautics in Paris (1914). Volunteered to French Air Force at begining of WWI. In 1915 came back to Russia. In 1918 was elected as Chair of all union collegie of air fleet management. In 1918 as a commander of air regiment of fifth army participated in battle for Kazan, in December of the same year was appointed as a chief commander of aviation and air fleet of south front. In 1922 participated in international aviation conferences in London and Rome. Last years of his life spent on aviation production plants of Leningrad and Moscow. Was executed before WWII, rehabilitated posthumous.

Akkuratov, Valentin Ivanovitch (born 1909)
soviet polar aviator, honored navigator of Soviet Union. Participated in winter and great patriotic wars. Worked as a navigator of arctic expeditions of gydrographic directorate of Glavseveromorput. In polar aviation from 1935. Participated in Papanin expedition to North Pole (1937), search for Levanevskii (1937-1938), first passenger flight on the rout Moscow-USA-Moscow (1941). 1949-1971 chief navigator of polar aviation.

Alashev, Uriy Timofeevitch (1923-1959)
soviet test pilot, colonel, hero of the soviet Union (posthumous 1963). Graduated from Vayzma military school and School of test pilot (1950) and Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI). Worked at Flight Research Institute Letno-Ispytatelnyi Institute (LII) and Tupolev Experimental Design Bureau Opytno-Konstruktorskoe Bureau (OKB). Tested Tu-16, -75, -95, -104, -114. Died during tests of Tu-105.

Aleksandrov, Vladimir Leontievich (1894-1962)
soviet scientist, professor, doctor of technical sciences. Graduated Moscow Higher Technical School (MVTU) as a student of Zhukovskii, worked in Central Air- Gidrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) from 1921. Constructed first soviet passenger aircraft AK-1 (jointly with Kalinin) in 1924. Was repressed in 1938 and spent few years working in TsKB 29 NKVD. From 1941 in Tupolev OKB. 1945-1962 in LII.

Alekseev, Anatoliy Dmitrievitch (1902-1974)
soviet polar aviator, Hero of the Soviet Union. Participated in Civil and Great Patriotic wars. Participated in search for lost expedition of Nobile (1928), Papanin expedition to North Pole, search for Levanevskii. Supervised aeral operations of rescue of ice crashed "Siiraykov", "Malugin" and "Sedov". Worked as polar aviation pilot, test-pilot and chief of navigation office of polar aviation.

Alekseev, Semen Michaloivitch (born 1909)
soviet aviaconstructor. Graduated from MAI (1937). Worked in Tupolev, Chizhevskii and Lavochkin OKB. Participated in development of LaGG-3, La-5, La-5FN, La-7, La-9. In 1946-48 chief designer in OKB 21 in Gorkii where under his leadership were build experimental heavy fighters I-211, I-212 and I-215. Worked in TsAGI and in OKB-1 in Kimry. In 1952-73 supervised development of air-refueling systems, systems of rescue and life support for spacecraft.

Alelukhin, Alexei Vasilevitch (born 1920)
ace, pilot, general-major of aviation. Hero of the Soviet Union (twice). Graduated from Frunze Military Academy (1948) and Higher Military Academy (1953). Finished Patriotic war as a deputy commander of fighter regiment. Flew more than 600 combat missions with 40 confirmed kills and 17 shared.

Alekhnovitch, Gleb Vasilievitch (1886-1918)
Russian pilot, stabs-captain. Learned to fly on glider. Graduated Sevastopol Aviation School (1910). Tested Gakkel and Sikorskii aircraft. From 1912 worked as a test pilot at Russo-Balt Vagonnyi factory (Petersburg). Was one of the first to fly Sikorskii's Ilya Muromets. Established number of records. In WWI was captain of IM. Killed in IM crash while flying in bad weather.

Alksnis (Astrov), Yakov Ivanovitch (1897-1938)
soviet military leader. In Red Army from 1919. Participated in WWI and Civil wars. Graduated from Academy of RKKA (Frunze) in 1924, Kachinsk military school (1929). 1926-31 deputy of VVS RKKA, 1931 chief VVS RKKA, member of Revolution Military Council (revvoensoviet) of USSR and later Military Council of People Commisariat (narcom) of Defense. From January 1937 also deputy narcom of defense on aviation. In 1929 master the flight and in the summer of 1929 took a record breaking flight (with V. I. Pisarenko) on the route Moscow-Sevastopol. One of the initiators of Osaviachim movement. Participated in planning of record flights of Chkalov and Gromov to USA via North Pole. Repressed and rehabilitated posthumous.

Amet-Khan, Sultan (1920-71)
ace pilot, colonel, test-pilot, Hero of the Soviet Union (twice). In Red Army from 1939. During Great Patriotic war was a fighter pilot. Finished as a deputy of fighter regiment with 603 combat missions which resulted in 30 confirmed kills plus 19 shared. Became a test-pilot after the war. Tested more than 100 types. Killed in test flight.

Andreev, Eugenii Nikolaevitch (born 1926)
parachutist, colonel, Hero of SU. Graduated from Alma-Ata VD School (1955). In 1947-86 tester of parachutes and ejector systems in Scientific Research Institute (NII) VVS. Tested more than 200 parachute types, emergency extraction systems and space suites. Jumped from more than 50 types of a/c. Hold 8 records and first to jump from 25,5 km altitude.

Anopov, Boris Andrianovitch (1915-86)
honored pilot. After Great Patriotic war worked at GosNII of Civil Aviation. Tested Il-62, Tu-154 and Mi-2. Established world speed record in 1963 on Mi-2. Flew 30 types of a/c.

Anokhin, Sergei Nikolaevitch (1910-86)
test-pilot, colonel, honored test-pilot of SU, Hero of SU. Tested MiG-19 on inverted spin, jet assisted take off, flutter, supersonic dive handling of MiG-15, artificial gravity Tu-104 flights as well as spin characteristics of transport/bomber aircraft. Tested unpiloted flying vehicles, flying tank glider.

Antonov, Oleg Constantinovitch (1906-1984)
designer, academician, one of the founders of the soviet gliderism. In early years designed gliders OKA-1, -2, -3, Standart-1, -2, City of Lenin. Upon graduation from Leningrad Polytechnic (1930) - chief of glider KB of Osavaichim in Moscow, 1933-38 designer at glider factory in Tushino. Designed more than 30 types of gliders, including UPAR, Us-1, Us-4, BS-3, -4, -5, Rot-Front-1 through -7, IP, RE, M, BA-1. In 1938-40 worked in Yakovlev OKB, 1940-41 at Krasniy Letchik aircraft factory on design of light transport aircraft, later supervised its introduction into series at Kaunas aircraft plant. Supervised production of transport glider A-7. In 1943-46 first deputy of Yakovlev OKB and in 1945 - chief of the Novosibirsk branch of OKB. In 1946 chief designer of freshly established OKB transferred in 1952 to Kiev. In 1967-84 designer general. Under his leadership military transport a/c An-8, -12, -22, -26, -32, -72, -124, multipurpose STOL An-2, -14, -28 and passenger An-10, -24, all metal gliders An-11, -13, -15 and hang-gliders Slavutich were designed.

Arzhanikov, Nikolai Sergeevich (1905-82)
scientist, aerodynamic research. Graduated from MGU (1926). 1929-31 worked in TsAGI, in 1939-40 first deputy chief of TsAGI. 1930-82 chair of aircraft design faculty in MAI.

Arhangelskii, Alexandr Alexandrovitch (1892-1978)
designer, doctor of technical sciences. Graduated from MVTU (1918). During his studies worked at aerodynamic lab headed by Zhukovskii. 1918-36 worked at TsAGI. Jointly with Stechkin B. S. Designed and build several aerosleds ARBES. After establishment of aircraft KB of Tupolev at TsAGI, participated in all ANT designs. In 1932 appointed as a chief of the dept. of speed-aircraft. Leading designer of the first soviet bomber ANT-40 (SB) and its transport development PS-35. From 1936 head of KB and responsible for large scale production of SB. Chief designer of Ar-2 and B. In 1941 Arhangelskii KB rejoins Tupolev KB. From 1947 first deputy chief designer.

Artseulov, Konstatin Konstantinovitch (1891-1980)
test-pilot, one of the founders of the soviet gliderism, painter. Finished flight school of First Russian Association of Flying (1911). Participated in WWI. First to put Newport-21 into forced spin in Russia (1916). In 1923 tested first soviet fighter I-1 designed by N. N. Polikarpov. In 1923 was awarded diploma of pilot-gliderist #1. Designed five gliders. Participated in first photo- and ice recon flights. In 40s retired from aviation and became an artist. Member of the Union of the Artists of USSR.

Astakhov, Fedor Alekseevich (1892-1966)
soviet military leader, Marshall of aviation (1944). In RKKA from 1918. During Civil war chief army aviation, chief VVS of Siberia. Graduated from Sevastopol School of military pilots (1916). Participant of Great Patriotic war. Deputy commander of VVS RKKA (1942-43), deputy chief of DA(1943-44). After war head of Chief Directorate of State Air Fleet (GVF) till 1947.

Babushkin, Michail Sergeevitch (1893-1938)
polar pilot, hero of SU. Participated in Civil war. Graduated Gatchina military aviation school (1915) where later became an instructor. From 1923 served in Artic. Participated in search of Nobile (1928), "Cheluskin" (1933), "Sadko" (1935), Papanin's North Pole (1937) expeditions, search of Levanevskii (1937-38). Died in aircraft crash.

Baidukov, Georgii Filippovitch (born 1907)
pilot, colonel-general, hero of SU. Graduated from 1st Moscow school of military pilots (1928) and Higher Genshtab Academy (1951). Flew with Belaykov and Chkalov record flights: Moscow-Udd (1936) and Moscow-North Pole-Vancuver (1937). Participated in Winter war (commander of fighter regiment) and Great Patriotic war (commander of fighter division). 1947-49 head of GVF.

Balabuev, Petr Vasilievitch (born 1931)
aircraft designer, doctor of technical sciences. Graduated from Kharkov aviation Institute (1954). Worked in Antonov OKB (designer general from 1984). Worked on An-8, -10, -12, -14, -22, -24, -26, -28, -30 ,-32, -72, -74, -124 and their modifications. Lead the constraction of An-225.

Balandin, Vasilii Petrovitch (1904-73)
one of the organizers of soviet aviation industry, general-major. Graduated from Moscow Institute of Railroad Enginnering (1930). In 1937-46 director general of Rubinsk and Ufa aviation plants, deputy of Poeple's Commitee on aviation industry, 1953-57 first deputy of ministry of aviation. During Great Patriotic war he organized production of engines for Yak-3, -9, Pe-2.

Baranov, Petr Ionovitch (1892-1933)
soviet military leader. Participated in WWI, during Civil war commander of the army. In 1923 chief of armour forces of RKKA, 1924 chief of VVS RKKA. Died in aircraft crash.

Bartini, Robert Ludvigovich (Roberto Oros di Bartini) (1897-1974)
aircraft designer, scietist. Born in Fiuma (Rieka, Yugoslavia). In 1921 became a member of Italian communist party. Graduated from officer school (1916), flying school (1921) and Milan Polytechnical Institute (1922). In 1923 after fashist turnover in Italy he was undercover transfered to USSR as aviation engineer. From 1923 occupaied several eng.-command positions in VVS RKKA, in 1928 headed department of experimental amphibious aircraft design, from 1930 head of design department of NII GVF, designer general. Designed amphibious aircraft DAR (long range arctic recon. a/c), Stal-6 which established world speed record, Stal-7. Was unjustly procecuted and in 1937-47 was imprisoned. Continued his work on new aircraft deisigns in TsKB 29 NKVD and in Taganrog OKB. Later worked in SibNIA. Was rehabitated in 1956. Published papers in areas of aviation construction materials, technolgy, aerodynamics, dynamics of flight.

Bakhevandzhe, Gregorii Yakovlevich (1909-43)
Test pilot, captain, hero of SU (1973 posthumulus). From 1931 in Red army. Graduated from Orenburg aviation technical 1933 and flying 1934 military schools. Worked as a test pilot in NII VVS. Participated in Great Patriotic war. In 1942 recalled for testing of first soviet rocket fighter BI. Was killed during test flight.

Begeldinov Talgat Yakubekovich Born1922 Pilot , colonell, hero of SU twice. In red army from 1940. Graduated Chkalov military aviation school 1942, Gagarin miltary academy (1950). Participated in Great Patriotic war, starting as a pilot and finishing as a commander of sturmovik regiment. Has more then 300 combat missions.

Beda Leonid Ignativich (1920-76)
Pilot general-luitanent, hero of SU (twice), in Red army from 1940. Graduated from Chkalov military aviation school (1942). Participated in Great Patriotic War. Was pilot sturmovik, squadron commander, deputy of commander of sturmovik regiment. Had more than 200 combat missions.

Bezhevets Alexander Savvich. Born1929. Test piplot, general major, hero of SU. After graduation from Bataisk aviation school in 1951 worked as an instructor. Upon graduation from Mozhaiskii miltary engineering academy 1959 worked as a test pilot. Flew more than 70 types of aircrafts: MiG, Su, Yak, An, Il.

Belyakov Alexander Vasilievich (1897-1982) Navigator, doctor of geographyical sciences, general luitantant, hero of SU. In red army from 1919. Graduated from miltary school 1917. In 1935 professor and dean of Zhukovskii military academy RKKA. Baidukov and Chkalov flew record flights on roads, Moscow-Udd (1936) and Moskow-North Pole - Vancover (1937). In 1936-39 chief navigator of DA and VVS. From 1940 chief deputy of military academy of VVS. In 1945-60 dean of Gagarin academy, from 1960 professor of Moscow physical technical institute.

Belyakov Rostislav Apollosovich (born 1919)
Aircraft deisgner, academician, hero of socialist labor (twice). Upon graduation of MAI 1941 worked in Mikoyan OKB as engineer designer, from 1971 designer general of OKB. Under his leadership number of the aircraft and wapon systems were designed such as MiG 29, -31.

Beregovoi Georgii Timofeevitch (born 1921)
test-pilot, leutenant-general, cosmonaut, MS of phycology, hero of SU (twice). Graduated Voroshilovgrad School of military pilots (1941). Participated in Great patriotioc war. Had 185 combat missions. Finished the war as commander of sturmovik squadron. Worked as test-pilot in NII VVS. Tested MiG, La, Yak, Tu in their critical envelops. Flew more that 60 types of a/c. In 1964-72 selected in cosmonaut team. Space flight in 1968.

Bereznyak Alexander Yakovlevitch (1912-1974)
Aircraft designer, doctor of technical sciences. After graduation from MAI (1938) worked in Bolkhovitinov OKB, where together with Isaev designed first soviet rocket fighter BI (1942). From 1957 chief designer.

Beriev (Beriashvili) Georgii Michailovich (1903-79)
Aircraft designer, doctor of technical scienes, major-general. Graduated from Leningrad polytechnical Institute (1930). Under his leadership in TsKB was designed amphibious aircraft MBR-2 (1932). In 1934-68 was chief designer of Taganrog OKB. Amphibious aircraft Mp-1, MDR-5, MBR-7, Be-6 and jet powered R-1 and Be-10, also hydroplanes Be-8, -12, -2, -4 and transport Be-30.

Binsovat Matus Ruvimovich (1905-1977)
Aircraft designer, doctor of technical scienes, HSL. After graduation from MAI (1931) worked in aircraft industry. From 1938 chief designer OKB TsAGI, where under his leadership were build experimental aircraft SK-1 and SK-2. In 1941-48 chief designer of a number of the aircraft factories. From 1948 worked on UAVs.

Bolkhovitinov Victor Fedorovich (1899-1970)
Aircraft designer, doctor of technical scienes, general-major. Graduated from Zhukovsky academy (1926) where remained after graduation. In 1937-45 chief designer of OKB. Under his leadership were constructed DB-A bomber, experimental light bomber and interceptor BI. From 1949 professor of Zhukovsky academy.
