Monino

Special thanks to John Sloan (JohnS426@aol.com) for providing following images:

[Image] Sikorsky's Ilya Myromets. World's first four-engine bomber. Mockup.
[Image] Tupolev's ANT-2 two-passenger plane. First soviet all-metal aircraft.
[Image] Scaled down (2/3) version of the record breaking ANT-25/RD (Recordnaya Dal'nost). Chkalov, Belyakov and Baidukov flew ANT-25 in transarctic flight on the route Moscow-Vancouver. It was designed with long range bombing in mind. Pavel Sukhoi was leading the ANT-25 design team. One of the original aircraft is on display at Chkalov's museum.
[Image] ANT-40/SB - Skorostnoi Bombardirovschik. By June 1941 94% of bombers in Red Army air force were SB.
[Image] DB-3 Dalniy Bombardirovschik was designed by Ilyshin OKB. Its modification (TsKB-30 "Moskva") flew from Moscow to US in 22 h 56 min covering 8000 km with 348km/h average airspeed. In the night of August 8, 1941 fifteen DB-3T (torpedo bomber) of Baltic Fleet dropped first bombs on Berlin. From August 11, 1941 DB-3F of VVS resumed bombing.
[Image] I-16 fighter. "Rada" was world's first monoplane fighter with retractable gear to enter the service. Originally designed by Polykarpov with closed cockpit, it was reversed to open as a response to pilots' complains. Believed to be a mockup.
[Image] Yak-9U (Usilennyi - Strengthened) was first all-metal Yakovlev's design. Some 16,769 Yak-9s were build among 36,732 Yak fighters. The North Korean air force Yak-9P is on display at USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson (USAF serial T2-3002).
[Image] MiG-3. One of at least two survived aircraft. MiG-3 was the best interceptor at the moment it was introduced in service. Lack of pilot skills with new a/c as well attempts to use MiG-3 for ground attack missions lead to decrease of a/c potential.
[Image] Sturmovik Il-2. Altogether 36,163 Il-2s were produced between 1941 and 1944. Stalin's message to directors of aviation plants producing Il-2 included: "Il-2s needed by Red Army as air, as bread". Il-2 were used in air-to-air combat against Ju-52s near Dem'yansk and Stalingrad. Among defensive armament Il-2 had ten airborne retarded grenades AG-2.
[Image] Il-10 replaced Il-2 on production lines by 1944. Aircraft had a greater speed, maneuverability and armor protection than its predecessor. Below 2000 meters the speed of Il-10 was only 10-15 km/h less that of Me-109G-2 and FW-109A-4. First Il-10s appeared in the sky of the eastern front in October 1944.
[Image] Pe-2 dive-bomber. One of the best Petlyakov designs. RAF Hurricane pilots escorting Pe-2 mentioned that "they have to go all-out to keep station' with Pe-2 which 'climbed and flew at a rate that astounded our boys considerably'.
[Image] World's first rocket fighter Bereznyak-Isaev BI. It flew earlier than notorious Me-163 Komet. Although not as advanced, it had impressive performance and armament.
[Image] Tu-2. Modifications of this bomber took ANT-58 through -69 designation slots. Aircraft remained in service until 1950. Some Chinese Tu-2s were encountered by British and American airman during the Korean war.
[Image] Transitional Jet-fighter: Yak-15. It retained the wings, the tail-wheel undercarriage rear fuselage and tail unit of all-metal Yak-3U. Used axial-flow Junkers Jumo 004B engine (RD-10). Yak-15 was lightest ever operational Jet-fighter (2,640 kg loaded).
[Image] Boeing's B-29 clone: Tu-4 Bull. This is first of preproduction series aircraft. Had a heavier defense armament consisting of five pair of 23 mm NS-23 cannons. Type was used for if-flight refueling tests. About 400 were delivered to Chinese air force.
[Image] Tu-16 Badger. Soviet reply to Vulcan and B-47.
[Image] Tu-128 Fiddler. 34,000-45,000 kg class interceptor. Owns its origin to Tu-98 "mystery bomber" which was developed as a tactical transonic bomber. Tu-128 is the largest interceptor in the world. It main objective was to intercept B-52 long before they approached the soviet airspace.
[Image] Tu-22 Blinder was first soviet transonic bomber in service. The position of engines made aircraft difficult to fly at high speeds. Its powerful radar was used as mini-AWACS to vector interceptors.
[Image] Tu-22M Backfire. Swing wing bomber. Rear radar cued cannon is part of ECM suit of the a/c. Special chaff rounds could be used.
[Image] Yak-25 Flashlight. First soviet twin-engined multi-seat all-weather fighter to enter service with the air force.
[Image] Yak-36 Freehand VTOL aircraft. A huge nose boom houses puffer-pipe control nozzles. Powered by two turbojets mounted side-by-side at the base of the forward fuselage.
[Image] World's largest helicopter: Mil's V-12/Mi-12. One of the prototypes has lifted a payload of 40,204 kg to 2,255m.
[Image] Sukhoi's S-100/T-4 supersonic cruise missile bomber. In the background: Yak-24 Horse aka Letayuchy Vagon (Flying Boxcar), Mi-8 Hip, Mi-24 Hind-A, Mi-17, Ka-25 Hormone and Mi-10 Hook.

Following photos where taken by A. Gretchikhine in 1994:
[Image] Beriev's Be-12 "Chaika". You can see nose of Myasischev's M-17 "Mystic" in the background, plus hub of Mi-6.
[Image] Center: MiG 105-11. An experimental prototype built to clear the way for the future Soviet space shuttle. Its role was to assess handling, abandon-orbit, and landing procedures. Right rear: Su-24 prototype (T-6-1) with fixed geometry wings and lift engines. Right: radom of T-10 (Flanker's prototype). Left: E-166.
[Image] Bartini's VVA-14 or M-62 VTOL aircraft. Designed for the anti-submarine role.

Thanks to Ken Duffey (KED@wpo.nerc.ac.uk) for following photos:
[Image] Speed record a/c is apparently not the record-breaking Mikoyan Ye-166 (it is only painted to represent it). The Ye-166 was a Ye-152-1, the a/c at Monino is in fact a Ye-152M. (taken at Monino 1993).
[Image] Lavochkin La-250 Anakonda.
[Image] MiG-9. It is not first prototype as bort number implies. The aircraft received this paint job for the movie.
[Image] Su-27 T-10 prototype.
[Image] Sukhoi T-6 fixed wing prototype of the Su-24 Fencer - note the down-turned wingtips.
