Aerobatics has a long standing tradition in Italy, mainly due to military activity which was developed between WW1 and WW2. After WW2, Italian Air Force continued to make effort to keep the pace and, during the years, gained worldwide reputation with the "Frecce Tricolori" Aerobatic Wing, mounted initially on FIAT-Aeritalia G-91 and later on Aermacchi MB-339.

Civil Aerobatic pilots had nevertheless no way to compete at home: a pioneer, Guido COSTANZO, competed in 1956 Lockheed Trophy with a Zlin Z526 without success, being level of international pilots too high for his standards.

First appearance of an Italian Team was at EAC'75 in Chateauroux, where a young and ambitious Sergio DALLAN, flying an old Z526 Akrobat, together with Pino VALENTI and Maurizio ZUCCOLI on a Pitts S1, had his first participation, never leaving the arena since then.

In 1976 Italy organized his first Aerobatic Competition, "Trofeo Roberto Crippa", in honour of the famous painter-pilot, fallen in a spin accident, which was the first real promoter of Sport Aerobatics in Italy.

Since then, most has changed: number of pilots is steadily growing, aircraft are becoming new and modern, many experimental have been built and fly in National Championship in all categories.

National 1996 results are outstanding: more than 70 pilots competed in 8 contests, flight level, with the help of foreign judges, is improving, new Sukhoi, CAP-231/232 and Extra aircraft are flying and, for the first time, more than 15 pilots qualified for Unlimited Category.
