Bresso (Milan) hosted two meetings on Dec 14 and 21, the first for Sportsmen and Intermediate Categories, the latter for Advanced and Unlimited. Several judges and organizers intervened as well.
Chaired by Luca Salvadori, an introduction has been presented regarding results of previous Championships and present trends. While competing pilots, after a burst to 75 in 1995, stabilized around 60 in all Categories, the continuing crisis of most Aero Clubs causes a declining number of contest to be held. For next season, for instance, only 5 contests have been requested, while 1997 saw 8 (not all have been actually held, nevertheless).
In both sessions concern arises about judges and related issues: while judges number is steadily albeit slowly decreasing, peoples are less motivated and nevertheless subject to increasing working loads. Some pilots observed that, even with best intentions, it is really difficult and lenghty to become a judge, since present rules ask for 6 contests as assistant judge before final appointment. Since contests are quite few, the goal takes some years to be achieved, mainly for a pilot wishing to help in Categories he's not competing in.
Therefore, a proposal arose regarding organization of judges schools along with pilot training session: an experienced judge would this way teach "on the field" and expedite newbies' training.
Another interesting proposal relates to calculation method for Championship scores: winner would score 100, while other competitors scores would be proportioned to actual realized points. This method would give more value to victory while maintaining the scoring hierarchy as emerged from competition.
Unlimited pilots, whose discussions are hotter, expressed a clear disappointment about latest CIVA decisions on maintaining the box, the Unknowns and Q-Program. Some of them proposed to change radically the rules, grabbing new ideas from well-established "artistic" sports (skating, gymnastics). Competition would be held over an Aresti 15-figures freestyle (called "Long Program"), a 10-figures freestyle without any limitations but total K (called "Short Program"), and the 4' Freestyle (with separate ranking). This would lead to dramatic improvement of spectacularity without any safety issue, but such a tradition-breaking proposal needs the widest approval by Unlimited pilots, thus a new meeting has been called for on Jan 25.
Regarding promotion, some peoples would like to join Categories back in all contests, in order to gain from "towing effect" of Unlimited. It has been demonstrated, nevertheless, that it is practically impossible to held contests with more than 2 categories over weekends only, and most pilots, judges and supporting peoples have only those days to devote to their sport.
