MODULAR COURSE FOR INSTRUMENT RATING (IR) (PDF)

This is information package to get an Instrument Rating at Aero Club Milano FTO (Flight Training Organization) through the modular course.   1. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS.
    • A current PPL(A) or CPL(A) with 50h PIC (Pilot In Command)
  2. GROUND AND FLIGHT COURSE.
    Aero Club Milano FTO organizes two IR (Instrument Rating) courses a year. Normally the courses start in April and September. Lessons schedule is published in advance to allow students to be properly informed.
    • GROUND COURSE. The ground course (120h) is held in the classroom along the week: subjects include aviation technology, meteorology, air navigation, piloting techniques and others as required buy JAR-FCL. Course duration is 6 months. Books, maps and other learning aids are supplied by Aero Club Milano and as approved by relevant rules and standards.
    • FLIGHT COURSE. Flight training is performed on FTO airplanes under the responsibility of the assigned Flight Instructor. The flight activity is scheduled together with the student: on the whole it takes around 6 months,varying from student to student, depending on proficiency and flight currency of the candidate.
  3. FLIGHT ACTIVITY DURING TRAINING
    • 50h with an instructor for IR on single-engine airplane
    • 55h with an instructor for IR on multi-engine airplane
  4. AIRCRAFT.
    Any aircraft may be used for flight training if included in the following categories.
    • AIRCRAFT TO BE USED FOR TRAINING.
      • Single-engine, IFR-certified airplanes.
      • Multi-engine, IFR-certified airplanes.
      • IFR-certified airplanes without limitation in class or type.
    • AIRCRAFT TO BE USED FOR THE EXAM.
      • SINGLE-ENGINE IR: Single-engine, IFR-certified airplanes without limitation in class or type.
      • MULTI-ENGINE IR: Multi-engine, IFR-certified airplanes without limitation in class or type.
  5. FINAL EXAM.
    As soon as required skill and minimum flight activity is reached, an internal progress test is performed. If exam is passed, candidate is required to pass an exam in front of an Aviation Authority commission to have license issued. Exam is both theory (multiple-choice questions form) and practical (cross-country flight).
  6. COSTS.
    Average cost is 16.000,- to 21.000,- €. May vary depends on student's disposition and proficiency. Expense is strictly related to flight activity and may be diluted over the whole training timeframe: students are assigned an account on which costs will be charged to be covered by cash in advance.
  7. DOCUMENTS.
    Since IR is a legal document, it is necessary to open a folder at ENAC (Italian Aviation Authority) including the following documents and certificates. Burocratic part is taken care of by Aero Club Milano under student's delegation and is part of services offered by the Club.

  8. APPLICATION.
    Aero Club Milano helps candidates in handling the documents necessary to get the medical certificate. Application is finalized and relevant fees are paid only after medical certificate has been issued. Club's Board confirms application according to Statute. Applicant must pay association and course fee before initial class date. The student will then be assigned a flight instructor, together with whom the training flights will be scheduled.
